Stopping Negative Mindsets
This involves starting to recognize negative thoughts and mindsets and then trying to restructure the way you think about things. One of the things is recognizing how you feel. Is it negative or positive? Address what the truth is and try to restructure the wrong thing to something positive.
It looked like the other day someone was going to pull out in front of me on the road. One of my first thoughts was you feel entitled. Then I caught myself that I was in a negative mindset. Now I could go on thinking like that and feeling that anger or I could stop it. So I asked myself, how can I restructure this? We need to start making sure we are thinking positively.
What I thought of is, if I had pulled up quicker, it might not have happened. The main thing is it taught me to watch out more for others. That was something I could learn and do so; the negative emotion turned into a positive. I felt like I had learned something. I had moved on. Very simple, and it was logical too.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter if it makes a lot of sense as long as it gets you out of a negative mindset. Some might say well that makes no sense. Well, I could be mad, or I could try to make it productive. Try to restructure something into something positive. Sometimes we feel stressed and don’t know what to do next, or we feel anger, or we are jealous or frustrated. It is key to first identify the negative feeling/thought and then ask yourself how can I restructure this positively. Here are a few examples below.
If you start your day and something bad happens, you may be tempted to be in a bad mood or be angry or sad. Start to notice the negative thoughts coming at you and think about how to reconstruct your thoughts to a positive. Sometimes redirecting to a positive means knowledge and understanding of something. For instance, someone says something hurtful to you rather than dwell on it; you think their opinion probably will not matter in 10 years, so why do I care. You may even have what I call a repeatable. When something like that happens, maybe you say to yourself, why do I care? Another thing is I try to see the mindset of where the person is coming from that often helps me know how to deal with that type of person.
Try to find the right things to focus on and disassociate from certain things while you’re in a negative mindset.
Take a moment and list some of the negative things you tell yourself and write down beside it a idea on how you might be able to reconstruct that into something positive when it comes into your mind.
